Why is it important to do pregnancy checks on my ewes and cows?

It is necessary to identify “passenger cows” (cows that don’t conceive) at the earliest so that they can be dealt with appropriately and so that limited and costly resources will not be wasted in keeping them longer than necessary.

If an excessive number of cows or heifers do not conceive, it is important to know this at an early stage so that remedial steps can be taken. Bulls may be infertile, feed and supplements may be inadequate or a breeding disease may be present in the herd.

It is also best to know the approximate calving or lambing dates of your cows or ewes in order to keep an eye on them and detect dystocias (difficult births) as soon as possible.
