Consulting Hours

  • What are your consultation hours?

    Our vetshop hours are:

    • Monday to Friday: 8:00 am - 17:00.
    • Saturday: 09:00 - 12:00.
    • Consultations are done by appointment to ensure the best possible service to all our clients.

  • Do you assist with emergencies after hours?

We always try to walk the extra mile with all of our clients and patients. In order to deliver exceptional service for you and your furry friend, our veterinarian needs to be as fit as a fiddle at all times and can therefore not work 24/7. If we are unable to assist you after hours, we will refer you to one of our trusted colleagues.

  • What animals do you treat?

We render companion animal (dogs and cats), production animal (cattle, goat, sheep and pigs), equine and wildlife veterinary services. We offer a limited range of services for exotic animals. Our vetshop has an extensive selection of products for a wide variety of animals. This includes food (for companion as well as exotic animals), toys, clothing, production animal vaccinations, tick and flea treatments and much more! For more information on any of our products or services, please drop us a phone call or email.

  • Why should I have my animals vaccinated?

Vaccinations are a vital part of keeping your animals healthy and preventing serious diseases. Vaccination often seems unnecessary to some people, but prevention is better than cure since some of these diseases are often fatal. Furthermore, treatment of some of these diseases, such as Parvo virus (Katgriep), can result to a hefty veterinary bill. Some of these diseases can also be contracted by humans, such as Rabies which can be fatal. Small puppies have to get an initial series of three vaccinations in order to obtain immunity. Thereafter the vaccinations have to be repeated on a yearly basis. Vaccination of production animals is also extremely important in order to ensure your herd’s health, decrease losses because of deaths and maximize production. Please contact us for more information regarding different vaccines and vaccination programs.

  • What is the best age to sterilise (spay/neuter) my pet?

We recommend sterilising all your cats or dogs at 5 months of age. This ensures that your pets have enough time to grow and develop and also decreases their risk of complications because of anaesthesia. Furthermore, there are various advantages of spaying or castrating your pet before it becomes sexually mature. Some of these advantages include a decreased risk of certain medical conditions, e.g. certain cancers and uterine infections, avoiding unwanted behaviour or aggression, and not having unexpected, unwanted litters.

  • Should I sterilise my pet, even if there are no other pets on my property?

We still encourage sterilising your pet, even if there cannot be any unwanted pregnancies. The reason being the medical advantages of spaying/castrating dogs and cats. Spaying a female before her first heat cycle significantly reduces the risk of mammary cancer and completely removes the risk of pyometra (uterine infection) which can be fatal if left untreated. Having males castrated reduces their risk of prostatic diseases such as cancer.

  • Why should I have my pet microchipped?

Every microchip has a unique number which, together with your contact information, is stored on a national database. Should your pet ever become lost, it can be scanned by a veterinary practice or rescue shelter in order to obtain your contact information and reunite you with your furry friend. To prevent your pet of ever becoming a stray, please make sure they are kept in a secure area, that they have a collar with an identity disc and, very importantly, that they are microchipped!

  • Do you have a grooming parlour onsite?

We do not have a permanent parlour at our practice. We do however have a groomer in every two weeks to service all of Zeerust’s furballs. For more information, please contact Annette Visser at +27 83 654 5779.

  • Why should I have a breeding soundness evaluation done on my ram or bull?

It is extremely important to know whether your ram or bull is fertile and does not carry any sexually transmitted diseases. Looks can often be deceiving. Having an infertile ram or bull can lead to serious losses because of a decreased production rate. When testing your ram or bull we can determine the quality of its sperm and whether it is carrying any unwanted diseases that can infect your whole herd.

  • Why is it important to do pregnancy checks on my ewes and cows?

It is necessary to identify “passenger cows” (cows that don’t conceive) at the earliest so that they can be dealt with appropriately and so that limited and costly resources will not be wasted in keeping them longer than necessary. If an excessive number of cows or heifers do not conceive, it is important to know this at an early stage so that remedial steps can be taken. Bulls may be infertile, feed and supplements may be inadequate or a breeding disease may be present in the herd. It is also best to know the approximate calving or lambing dates of your cows or ewes in order to keep an eye on them and detect dystocias (difficult births) as soon as possible.
